STAT+: Former FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb questions RFK Jr.’s measles response, infant formula plan

NEW YORK — Former Food and Drug Administration commissioner Scott Gottlieb criticized the current administration’s approach to containing a deadly measles outbreak as well as its plan to improve the infant formula supply.

Gottlieb was the FDA’s leader during Trump’s first administration and offered his thoughts on a wide range of challenges facing health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. at STAT’s Breakthrough Summit East on Thursday.

In particular, Gottlieb called out Kennedy’s response to the measles outbreak. He said it lacked a full-throated push to vaccinate and instead focused on parental choice and using vitamin A as a treatment. Studies show that vitamin A can improve the chances of surviving measles, but some experts have questioned whether it has benefits in children who are not malnourished.
