Extracellular Vesicles Delivered by a Nanofiber-Hydrogel Composite Enhance Healing In Vivo in a Model of Crohn's Disease Perianal Fistula (Adv. Healthcare Mater. 7/2025)

Crohn's Disease

Perianal fistulas in Crohn's disease (CD) face high treatment failure rates despite surgical advances. The article 2402292, Hai-Quan Mao, Florin M. Selaru, and co-workers introduce an injectable nanofiber-hydrogel composite (NHC) delivering mesenchymal stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) to treat CD perianal fistula in a rat model. The EV-NHC demonstrated superior healing and reduced inflammation via sustained EV release, macrophage polarization, and neo-vascularization, offering a promising clinical translation pathway.
