THE DETAILS In collaboration with the University of Liverpool’s Microbiome Innovation Centre and Brain & Behaviour Lab, Unilever scientists discovered that higher concentrations of beneficial skin microbes, particularly Cutibacterium, on the face and underarm are linked to lower stress and improved mood. The study, published in the British Journal of Dermatology, is the first to establish these body-site-specific microbiome-wellbeing associations. Unilever, which already holds over 100 microbiome-related patents and a database of more than 30,000 skin samples, is integrating these insights across its beauty and personal care brands, including Dove, Vaseline, Pond’s, and Dermalogica.
