Online UK independent beer store The Beer Rep has branched out to launch a podcast that speaks to founders of indie breweries and industry professionals across Britain.

The Beer Rep launched in
October 2024 to allow people to hand-pick their favourite craft beers without the need for a subscription. The business, which offers a range of beers from a variety of small and established breweries, has set out to make craft beer “more accessible to everyone” by offering “exclusive discounts, loyalty rewards and fast nationwide delivery”.
Speaking to
the drinks business, about the business’s expansion, The Beer Rep CEO Martin Avis said:“I wanted our customers to connect more with the beers from the breweries that they were drinking from, and this is what gave birth to The Beer Rep Chats With podcast.”
Avis explained that the podcast gives its interviewees a back story and uncovers “how they got started and what they were doing before getting into the industry”.
Avis told
db that he “also wanted to bring to our customers' attention the challenges that UK independent breweries face and really wanted to show the differences (if any at all) from one brewery to another”.
Avis pointed out that the conversations he was having with the sector offered people more transparency and that it was constructive because all of the breweries he featured were ones the business stocked.
He explained: “I feel consumers want to know more about the breweries they're buying from and especially the founders. Having that information available can be the difference between a consumer trying their beers for the first time or even trying again. The podcast episodes are connected to our online shop, and we stock a range of beers from the breweries that we feature in the current episode and have a talk about them.”
Last Autumn, a campaign, launched by the Society of Independent Brewers and Associates (SIBA), included a brewery checker so that
consumers can find out if a brewer is independently owned, and an assured mark for brewers to use to show their genuine craft credentials.
According to SIBA statistics, the issue was not that there was no demand for independent beer, but it was getting access to the market and ensuring genuine independent beer is being sold to beer drinkers.
YouGov data published in October 2024 found that 75% of people surveyed believe consumers are being misled when purchasing beer from once independent craft breweries, such as Beavertown, Camden, and Fullers that are now owned by global beer giants Heineken, Budweiser and Asahi respectively.
Avis also added: “I whole-heartedly support the SIBA campaign to show consumers which UK breweries are independent, and on our store The Beer Rep, we reflect this by only stocking UK indie beers.”
The Beer Rep Chats With is available to listen on all major platforms from
Spotify,
Apple and
YouTube and to watch on YouTube. Beers are available via the company’s
