As we worked to update our vintage chart as we do every year, we asked our tasters to reflect on the past several vintages. Their thoughts (and those of some of the winemakers they spoke to) should give some insight into what goes into the scores and colors on our Vintage Chart giving you guidance on when to uncork that bottle you’ve been cellaring.

Alsace, Austria and Germany

2014 might just be the villain of the last decade in Europe—cold, wet, and downright miserable, especially in Austria, Germany and Alsace. Yet, in the hands of the best producers, who chose precision over abundance, it became something of a paradox: wines that are whisper-light yet layered with a complexity only struggle could create.Aleks Zecevic, writer at large

Barossa Valley

A recent tasting trip to South Australia’s Barossa Valley has reinforced my love for this iconic region’s 2021 vintage. While the ’22s and ’23s also look promising, near-perfect vintages like ’21—which brought long, slow ripening, excellent acid retention and flavor depth—feel increasingly rare in the age of climate chaos. Treasure them for the unicorns they are.Christina Pickard, writer at large

Beaujolais

Beaujolais can age with the grace of a Burgundy with time and patience. One can often appreciate it more after tannins and fruit begin to settle, especially in cooler vintagesReggie Solomon, writer at large

Bordeaux

Weather was the enemy in Bordeaux in 2024. From frost to hail, to rain, to mildew, the weather gods had it in for the region. Organic producers were spraying constantly. The fight was to protect what became among the smallest harvests since World War II. Time will tell.Roger Voss, writer at large

California Central Coast

When I started at the magazine in 2014, I was tasting a ton of 2011s, which was a very cool vintage. Many of these wines had been dismissed by other publications, but I found them to be stunning if lighter expressions of the Central Coast. They remain electric today, as 2011 is revered as a remarkable vintage.Matt Kettmann, Writer at large

Loire Valley

Sweet wines from the Loire like those from Coteaux du Layon and Bonnezeaux start to come into their best starting a decade after bottling, which our vintage chart reflects.Reggie Solomon, writer at large

Sierra Foothills

The longer ripening will produce wines reminiscent of the 1970s in style. 2023 will turn out to be a vintage for the decades.Bill Easton, Easton Vineyards (Sierra Foothills, California)

Sonoma County

A late bud break and long growing season in 2021 resulted in smaller than average crops in a number of Sonoma County regions. Despite the reduced quantities, there are loads of great maturing wines to be found.Tom R. Capo, Writer at large

Virginia

Following a challenging 2018, the 2019 vintage is a beautiful gift to the faithful farmer. We will be celebrating this year’s growing season for many years to come, for giving us Luca Paschina, Barboursville Winery (Piedmont, Virginia)
