STAT+: Health care industry, worried millions could lose ACA insurance, pushes for Trump to delay changes
Hospitals and health insurers are alarmed at the prospect of an increase in the number of people without health insurance.
Hospitals, health insurers, and insurance agents are asking President Trump to pump the brakes on a regulation that would lead to potentially millions of people losing their health insurance.
That’s not to say the health care industry disagrees with all of Trump’s proposals, which would make it more difficult for people to get health coverage through the Affordable Care Act’s marketplaces. But at a minimum, lobbyists are urging the White House not to enforce any new rules until 2027 at the earliest, according to a review of public letters that were due this month.
The Trump administration’s first major health care regulation targets the ACA marketplaces, which include the federal HealthCare.gov portal and online exchanges run by states. More than 21 million people are enrolled in ACA health plans, which are their primary option if they don’t get coverage from an employer or if they make too much money to qualify for Medicaid.
