As the American craft beer movement navigates new challenges, one thing remains clear: A few big beer brands are still dominating the industry. The research team at McLuck analyzed Google Trends data from all 50 states to find the most popular beer in each, and the results aren’t too surprising.
Of the 11 biggest beer brands, Budweiser reigns supreme, earning the top spot in nine states, including Alabama, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina and Texas. Coming in a close second is Michelob, which is the favorite beer in seven states, including Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Tennessee. It’s no coincidence that both Budweiser and Michelob are lagers, the most popular beer style in the world.
Somewhat notably, Guinness is tied for the third most popular beer, according to the Google Trends data–with fans in four of the chillier states: Alaska, Idaho, Montana and Rhode Island. Since its founding in the 18th century, the Irish stout has quietly become a global powerhouse. (If you’re a fan, check out these other Irish beers that are worthy of your attention.)
Less surprising is the fact that Sam Adams, the official beer of the Boston Red Sox, is still beloved by beer drinkers in Massachusetts (plus Iowa, North Dakota and Wisconsin).
America is still full of independent beer shops selling excellent craft beers, but the industry is at somewhat of a crossroads, as high rents and changing palates push some beloved local taprooms to close.
The punches keep coming, most recently with President Donald Trump’s threatened tariffs: 25% on imported steel and aluminum and on goods from Canada and Mexico. Experts say this will be detrimental to craft brewers. “It’s going to cost the industry a substantial amount of money,” said Matt Cole, brewmaster at Ohio-based Fat Head’s Brewery, to the Associated Press. “[It] will be crippling for our industry if this carries out into months and years.”
