Tesco marks 30 years of Clubcard with £9m gift to staff

Tesco is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its Clubcard loyalty scheme this weekend by offering a £9m gift to its colleagues.

Over 300,000 Tesco employees will share in this special gift, which includes free Clubcard vouchers as a “little extra” thank you for their contributions, The Grocer reported.

The Clubcard, which launched back in February 1995 was the UK’s first supermarket loyalty card, paving the way for the today’s countless schemes.

Today, more than 23 million UK households use a Tesco Clubcard, and the scheme now accounts for 82% of the supermarket’s sales.

As part of the celebrations, each colleague at the grocery giant will receive a £30 voucher, which can be exchanged with one of its Clubcard Reward Partners.

Tesco group membership and loyalty director Shama Wilson told the title: “Our colleagues have been a key part of the success of Clubcard, doing everything from signing up new members and helping answer their queries, to reminding shoppers to use their Clubcard at the checkout,” she said.

“With that in mind we wanted to give them a little extra thank you for the role they have played helping Clubcard deliver more for our customers today and over the past three decades.”

Tesco recently unveiled a new phase of its hyper-personalised Clubcard Prices scheme, offering tailored discounts to customers based on their shopping habits.

Currently in a trial phase, “Your Clubcard Prices” sends personalised offers to selected shoppers every Wednesday via the Tesco app.

These offers, which are automatically applied at checkout, will be available for seven days and can be used multiple times in larger Tesco supermarkets.
