Marty Makary took the opportunity to play the Make America Healthy Again movement’s greatest hits at his Senate confirmation hearing Thursday for Food and Drug Administration commissioner. He promised to be radically transparent, to follow the science wherever it leads, and to focus his efforts on ending childhood chronic disease.
“We need more humility in the medical establishment,” Makary said.
But Makary faced little pressure from senators to talk about many basic FDA policy issues. Four senators asked about the abortion drug mifepristone. Just one asked about accelerated approvals and rare disease drugs. There were no questions about GLP-1 drug shortages and compounding, nor on the FDA’s regulation of AI or lab-developed tests, for example.
