If Richard Gere and his wife, Alejandra, have any regrets about leaving the U.S. to pursue a new life in Spain with their children, they certainly aren’t letting on.

In fact, if Silva’s latest Instagram posts are anything to go by, the couple appear to be having the time of their lives—soaking up every opportunity that their new life in Europe has to offer, including the odd night out on the town.

Since the start of February, Richard, 75, and Alejandra, 42—who are now based in Madrid full time with three of their children—have jetted off on a number of trips, beginning with Granada, where the “Pretty Woman” actor was honored with the International Goya Award at the annual Goya Awards.

Having been handed the award by fellow actor Antonio Banderas, the on-screen legend opened up about how much his new home country means to him, telling the audience: “This is my new home now.”

Although Richard did not point to politics as one of his reasons for wanting to leave the U.S.—instead revealing in an April 2024 interview that he wanted to move so his wife could be closer to her family and loved ones—he went on to describe the “dark place” that he believes America has fallen into, slamming President Donald Trump as a “bully and a thug.”

“We’re all part of a universe of overlapping pain and sadness and joy. … I see this world that we’re in now forgetting that,” he said. “This very foolish tribalism is starting to take us over, where we think that we’re all separate from each other.

“And we have unfortunately elected officials that don’t inspire us in the way that we want to be inspired. I’m coming from a place now … we’re in a very dark place in America where we have a bully and a thug who is the president of the United States.

“But it’s not just in the U.S., it’s everywhere.”

Richard first opened up about his plans to quit the U.S. in a candid interview with Vanity Fair Spain, explaining that Alejandra has been “very generous” in agreeing to live in his home country for six years. So he only felt it right that she be allowed the opportunity to spend more time in her own country.

“It is a beautiful place, the food is extraordinary, and the people exude sensitivity and generosity, as well as a strong will to laugh and enjoy,” he told the outlet. “I’m looking forward to going there.

“For Alejandra, it will be wonderful to be closer to her family, her lifelong friends, and her culture. She was very generous in giving me six years living in my world, so it is only fair that I give her at least another six living in hers.

“I love Spain and the ability of the Spanish people to live transmitting joy and happiness.”

Certainly, Richard appears to be taking full advantage of all that his new home has to offer—spending some time at the historic Alhambra in Granada, a palace and fortress that is widely known as one of the best-preserved monuments of Islamic architecture in the world.

However, when it came to celebrating his wife’s 42nd birthday, the pair opted to take some time away from Spain—jetting off on a lavish trip to the Maldives with their children, with Alejandra sharing a series of images from the trip, describing it as “paradise.”

In the photos, she and Richard can be seen reclining on beanbags on the beach together at sunset, collecting shells and crabs with their sons, and enjoying a delicious picnic on the sand.

“What a treat!” Alejandra captioned the photos. “Feeling fortunate.”

It is a far cry from the ultra private life that the couple were living in the U.S., where they were residing in a stunning six-bedroom, 11-bathroom mansion in New Canaan, CT, which the actor purchased from crooner Paul Simon in 2022.

Originally, it was understood that Richard had been planning to turn a large portion of the property’s expansive grounds into a working farm, according to details shared during a local planning and zoning commission meeting in 2023.

However, seven months after revealing his plans to relocate overseas, the actor sold the property for $10.75 million in an off-market deal.

Although Richard did not officially list the home, its original description hailed the property as an “incomparable retreat” and a “personal oasis” with “spectacular grounds.”

The main house on the 31-acre property was originally built in 1938 by architect Harold R. Sleeper, and it features five bedrooms, grand formal rooms, “soaring ceilings,” and beautiful natural light.

The grounds include landscaped gardens, acres of lush natural scenery, and a swimming pool with an area for sunbathing and relaxing.

The 1,500-square-foot guesthouse on the property offers a “quintessential escape to be as creative and self-indulgent or as engaging and social as you wish,” the listing notes.

While Richard’s life in Spain might look vastly different from the one he was leading in the U.S., he recently told Elle España that he and his family are “happier than ever” since relocating to Europe in November.

“The truth is that you are seeing us in our momentum. We are happier than ever,” he said. Alejandra is happy “because she is at home, and I [am happy] because, if she is happy, I am happy.”

When the couple met in 2014, Alejandra was still living in Spain, and the couple spent several years in a long-distance relationship before tying the knot in 2018.

Since then, they have welcomed two children together, sons Alexander, 5, and James, 4, who both moved to Spain with them, along with Alejandra’s son, Albert, 11, whom she shares with ex-husband Govind Friedland.

Richard’s son Homer, 24, whom he shares with ex-wife Carey Lowell, has remained in the U.S., where he is pursuing his own career as an actor, basing himself out of New York City.
