Many expected General Motors to push forward a next-generation Chevrolet Camaro after discontinuing the long-running sixth-gen cars, but a new report throws serious doubt into the rumor mill. GM Authority recently reported that the seventh-generation car was dead, but there could be a light at the end of the tunnel for hopeful buyers.

GM decided to nix the next-generation Camaro due to a weak business case, with a source telling GM Authority the program had been “blown apart.” The new car had executive support and had apparently reached the planning stages before things fell apart.
While that’s a bummer for Camaro fans, there is still reason for hope, though the door could be closing for good. GM Authority’s source said that the project is “still in play, but the light at the end of the tunnel is now dimmer.”

GM and Chevy were expected to roll out the next-gen cars in 2026 or 2027, and many thought the new lineup would include electrified variants. That said, recent changes in the American political landscape have reversed many of the government’s emissions targets, driving some automakers to reconsider plans to kill off big engines in performance cars.
Dodge, which recently released the electric Charger Daytona, recently said it was considering a V8 for the car, and the inline-six-powered models should arrive soon. The government’s shift could give GM an incentive to revive the Camaro program, but things are changing so quickly that it will take time for businesses to adapt.
