M&S unveils £90m investment to transform London food halls

M&S is investing £90m in new and upgraded food halls across London, creating 450 new jobs in the capital.

The investment will see the opening of six new food halls in Clapham, Covent Garden, Fulham Broadway, Putney, New Malden, and Leytonstone, all of which are subject to planning permission.

The retailer said a further 11 stores in London will be renewed, including a major refresh of the iconic Pantheon store on Oxford Street.

The first of the renewed stores, the food hall at Clapham South, reopened this week. It features a refreshed produce section, doubled ambient and freezer sections, and an expanded bakery offering, with new flooring, fridges, and additional tills for added customer convenience.

The retailer’s £90m investment is part of its broader store renewal and rotation programme, aimed at ensuring M&S has the right stores in the right places.

Over 70,000sq ft of retail space will be added to the M&S estate in London, helping the company meet growing customer demand for both food and clothing offerings.

Renovations are also set to begin on the Pantheon food hall at Oxford Street this month with the food hall set to feature a pizza counter, hot chicken, and a new coffee shop concept. The food hall is expected to reopen in late summer.

M&S operations director Sacha Berendji said: “London has always been a special place for M&S, growing from penny bazaars in the early 20th century into fresh food halls like the one in Brixton we reopened last year.

“We serve thousands of customers in the capital across our full-line offering in larger stores on Oxford Street, which are soon to be redeveloped, to food on the move in train stations, and we are always looking at what we can do next.

“Our pipeline of stores demonstrates our continued investment in London, and we will continue to bring the very best of M&S to customers from Brixton to Barnet for years to come.”

At the start of this month, M&S also announced a £50m overhaul of stores across the North West, part of its broader investment in new and upgraded locations across the UK.
