UK consumer spending for Mother’s Day is set to hit £2.4bn this year, marking a 5% rise on 2024.
The amount of UK shoppers planning to buy at least one item for the celebration has increased to 56.4%, representing a 2.9ppt boost on last year, according to GlobalData’s latest retail Mother’s Day intentions report.
Additionally, consumers are planning to spend £17.43 more on their mothers than last year, leading to an average spend of £125.30.
The firm said retailers had an opportunity to cater to the rising demand for premium gifts and experiences due to more consumers planning to participate in the event.
It added that strategic marketing and tailored product offerings would be key to capitalising on the trend ahead of the celebration.
Gifting is set to form the most popular expense, with categories including clothing, fine jewellery and watches, and health and beauty to be among the most popular.
Supermarkets are set to benefit from a decreased interest in takeaways and dining out this Mother’s Day, with 17.5% of shoppers planning to have a meal at home with their mum, marking a 3.1ppt hike on 2024.
Mother’s Day shoppers also intend to splash out £52.32 on average on food and drink for the event.
GlobalData senior retail analyst Eleanor Simpson-Gould said: “Retailers should offer personalised gifting options, including customised clothing, bespoke jewellery pieces, and curated beauty gift sets.
“Providing unique and thoughtful gifts will appeal to the customers looking to make a special gesture on Mother’s Day.”
She continued: “Additionally, retailers must enhance the shopping experience by offering gift-wrapping services and convenient delivery options to make the process seamless for shoppers.”
Last year, GlobalData reported Mother’s Day spend was expected to rise on the prior year, despite inflation forcing shoppers to trade down.
The holiday also saw a rise in demand for John Lewis’s Lego bouquets as an alternative gift idea.
