L’Oréal Opens New US$160 Million R&I Center in New Jersey

THE WHAT? L’Oréal Groupe has completed its new North America Research & Innovation Center in Clark, New Jersey. The facility spans nearly 250,000 square feet and represents a US$160 million investment, marking it as the largest R&I center outside of France.

THE DETAILS The center includes a 26,000-square-foot modular laboratory, a consumer testing facility with a capacity for 400 daily participants, and an on-site mini factory for scaling final formulations before full-scale production. It employs over 600 scientists, engineers, and researchers, and is designed to work in collaboration with local academic institutions, biotech companies, and startups. Sustainable features include 10,000 solar panels covering 70% of the center’s energy needs and an eco-retention pond for stormwater management.

THE WHY? The establishment of this center is aimed at bolstering L’Oréal’s research and development efforts in North America, supporting product innovation for its cosmetics and personal care brands. It also serves to enhance local research capabilities and contribute to regional economic development.
