It’s no secret that a key element to keeping any team happy and productive is to keep them motivated. However, within the demanding and fast-paced environment of a production line or warehouse operation, this can sometimes be a challenge. Here at TheMusicLicence, we recognise the importance of music in the workplace and have some practical tips to help boost team morale and achieve the goal of a healthy and efficient workforce.
Our first tip is to recognise successes in your team. Having a sense of meaning and pride in your work is hugely important and goes a long way to keeping up workplace motivation. Ensuring that team members are recognised for outstanding work in front of their peers is a great morale booster for the individual and can also have the knock-on effect of driving ambition in other team members too. Promoting a workplace culture where constructive and positive feedback is shared regularly between managers and their team members is a good way of keeping everybody motivated and striving to do their best.
Repetitive work can be physically and mentally draining, so prioritising breaks for your employees is really important. And by making sure there is a comfortable and welcoming space for employees to use at break time to relax and recharge, it allows them to take their minds off their work for a period in the day that’ll help them focus for the rest of their shift. Consider having comfy seating, TVs, music and maybe even games available.
Listening to music whilst you work can be a great motivator as it boosts the mood and promotes a positive, friendly atmosphere. If it’s possible, it’s also a good idea to give employees some input into music played in their workplace, whether that’s choosing a particular radio station or asking people to feed into a playlist. Our latest research found that over half (54%) of warehouse workers feel happy when listening to music at work, almost half (49%) said it energised them, and relaxation comes with tunes for over two fifths (43%),
Research has also shown that listening to music whilst working can reduce mistakes, improve speed and also improve accuracy when performing tasks, so don’t underestimate what a powerful tool music can be in keeping staff motivated and productive.
Giving your employees small incentives can prove to be a big motivator in the long run and will make your staff feel valued. Regular staff socials are also a good way to help everyone get to know each other and feel like more of a team. Even just hosting a music quiz every once in a while is a good way to show appreciation to your team and improve morale and motivation.
But ultimately, you want to make these perks fun. If it’s appropriate and possible, can you add an element of gamification to their work? Instigating targets and challenging teams to compete against each other in a light-hearted way can promote a little friendly rivalry and see results skyrocket. Consider reward schemes like employee of the month and recognise success and achievements of team members who go above and beyond. This creates positive reinforcement and motivates the rest of the team as well, as there is another sense of purpose to their roles.
