THE WHAT? Gillette India has reported a 60% jump in third-quarter profit, fueled by robust demand for its grooming products, sending shares up nearly 10% after the earnings release.
THE DETAILS For the quarter ending March 31, the Procter & Gamble–owned brand posted a profit of 1.59 billion rupees (US$18.7 million), up from 991 million rupees a year earlier. Revenue from its core grooming segment — including razors and gel shaving creams, which make up over 80% of total sales — rose 15.6% to 6.45 billion rupees. While oral care sales remained largely flat, the company credited its profit surge to strong uptake of new product designs and innovations, particularly in multi-blade systems. Gillette India also significantly ramped up advertising and promotion expenses, which jumped nearly 61%, contributing to a modest 5% increase in total quarterly expenses. Rural demand, bolstered by good harvests and government support, has helped offset weaker urban sales under pressure from rising living costs.
THE WHY? Gillette India’s performance underscores the resilience of grooming and personal care demand in rural markets, even as urban consumers pull back amid inflationary pressures. By pushing product innovation and stepping up marketing investments, the company has solidified its dominance in the grooming category, turning rural momentum into a key growth engine.
