Dirt Locker®, the company that turned steep, erosion-prone slopes into flourishing terraces, is now bringing its modular know-how to level ground. Its new raised-garden system lets urban dwellers, small-lot owners, and renters build productive beds without digging, tools, or permanent hardware.

From Hillsides to Backyards

The original Dirt Locker® rings curve around hillsides, locking soil in place so vegetables and ornamentals can thrive on otherwise unusable land. Customers soon asked whether those same rings could be deployed on patios and lawns.

“Technically you could,” says founder Mark Trebilcock, “but it was never ideal for flat space.” He set out to design a purpose-built solution that would keep the brand’s hallmarks—recycled materials, interlocking edges, zero fasteners—while adding the flexibility small gardens demand.

How the System Works

Each unit is a semi-rigid arc molded from post-consumer plastic. Gardeners snap arcs together into circles, peanuts, crescents, or any free-form shape, then stack tiers vertically. The result is a deep, breathable bed that can stand alone on concrete or rest atop native soil. The layout borrows from African keyhole gardens: a central column holds compostable kitchen scraps; moisture and nutrients seep outward and downward, feeding roots and reducing irrigation.

“Nature doesn’t like straight angles,” Trebilcock notes. “Our rings let you follow nature’s curves instead of forcing plants into rectangles.”

Portability for the Modern Nomad

Traditional wood or metal beds require lumber, screws, saws, and—once installed—often have to be left behind when homeowners move. The Dirt Locker® system pops apart in minutes and fits in a car trunk. For renters, HOA residents, or pop-up community gardens, that portability means investment isn’t lost with a change of address.

Engineered for Efficient Growth

Each 6-inch-deep tier serves a purpose. Upper rings are lifted off quickly for harvesting root crops such as potatoes or carrots—no more trenching. Lower rings can host pollinator flowers or herbs that spill over the edges. The central column doubles as a compost chute or, if left open, an anchoring spot for a dwarf fruit tree.

Because the bed sits above grade, it warms earlier in spring and drains excess water, yet the compost core retains moisture—a boon in drought-prone cities.

Community-Driven Roots

The idea crystallized while Trebilcock was volunteering with former NFL player Garry Gilliam on the “Bleacher Garden” project in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Gilliam was converting derelict buildings into urban farms and asked whether Dirt Locker® could help residents grow potatoes in tight courtyards. The request highlighted a gap: renters needed something deep enough for tubers, modular enough for odd corners, and movable when leases ended. “That question lit the fuse,” Trebilcock recalls. “If it could work there, it could work anywhere.”

Growing Freedom, One Ring at a Time

Whether wrapped around a townhouse patio, circling a shade tree, or lining a rooftop, the raised garden system turns underused flat space into fertile ground. Gardeners can start with a single ring and add tiers season by season. All components ship flat, assemble by hand, and are 100 percent recyclable at end of life.

For Dirt Locker®, the launch marks more than a product expansion; it’s a mission to make self-sufficiency attainable for anyone, regardless of topography—or tenancy. “We helped people farm their hillsides,” Trebilcock says. “Now we’re helping the rest of the world farm their postage stamps.”

With urbanization rising and food security top of mind, Dirt Locker®’s new system offers a simple promise: if you have a few square feet, you can have a garden—and when you move, your garden moves with you.
