Dermalogica Faces Class Action Over ‘Made in USA’ Labeling Claims

THE WHAT? A class action lawsuit has been filed against Dermalogica LLC and parent company Conopco Inc. (Unilever), alleging that the skincare brand falsely labeled its cosmetic products as “Made in the USA.”

THE DETAILS Filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, the lawsuit claims Dermalogica’s “Made in the USA” labeling is misleading because the products reportedly contain essential foreign-sourced ingredients. Plaintiff Steven Lavallee alleges the labeling is unqualified and deceptive, violating California’s Consumers Legal Remedies Act, Unfair Competition Law, and False Advertising Law, and breaching express warranty.

Lavallee seeks to represent a California class of consumers who purchased Dermalogica products with these labels in the past four years. The complaint requests declaratory and injunctive relief, as well as compensatory and punitive damages. The case is part of a growing number of lawsuits scrutinizing “Made in USA” claims in the cosmetics and consumer goods sectors.

THE WHY? The lawsuit reflects increased legal pressure on beauty and personal care brands to clarify origin claims, particularly amid heightened scrutiny over consumer protection and product transparency in marketing practices.
