Data: Asda struggles as Aldi and Lidl gain market share amid rising grocery costs

Grocery inflation hit 4.7% in June — the highest level since March 2024 — as UK shoppers made 490 million trips to supermarkets in the four weeks to 15 June, according to the latest data from Kantar.

Despite rising prices consumers shopped more frequently, averaging almost 17 grocery trips per household and marking the highest footfall since March 2020.

This increase in visits was balanced by a slight drop in average spend per trip, which fell by 3p to £23.89.

While grocery sales overall grew by 4.1% compared with the same period last year, Asda’s sales declined by 1.7%, reducing its market share to 11.9%.

This contrasts with the strong growth of discounters Lidl and Aldi, which saw sales rise by 11.2% and 6.5% respectively, with Lidl reaching 8.1% market share and Aldi 10.9%.

Kantar’s head of retail and consumer insight Fraser McKevitt said: “Consumer concerns over price are continuing, and this is reflected in the figures. Sales of own label ranges grew at 4.2% this month, ahead of branded lines, as shoppers looked to balance their budgets.”

Fresh fruit sales surged as warmer weather encouraged shoppers to buy 2,400 packs of strawberries every minute in the last four weeks.

However, overall grocery volumes fell slightly by 0.4% year-on-year — the first decline of 2025.

McKevitt noted that emerging health trends could be a factor: “Supermarkets and grocery brands are entering new territory as weight loss drugs become more popular, with four in 100 households in Great Britain now including at least one GLP-1 user.

“That’s almost twice as many as last year, so while it’s still pretty low, it’s definitely a trend that the industry should keep an eye on as these drugs have the potential to steer choices at the till.”

During the period, Tesco, which increased market share by 0.5 percentage points to 28.1%, and Sainsbury’s, which grew sales by 5.7% to hold 15.2% of the market. Morrisons and Waitrose also posted sales rises of 2.2% and 5.5% respectively.

Convenience retailer Co-op holds 5.3% of the market, while frozen food specialist Iceland retains 2.3%, with sales growing 1.9%. M&S posted a notable 12% sales increase during the same period.
