Cabernet Nouveau: the latest innovation in Viña Vik’s A range
Viña Vik, a Chilean winery located at the heart of the Cachapoal Valley, is giving Cabernet Sauvignon a new face with the latest addition to its A portfolio: Cabernet Nouveau. Cabernet Nouveau: the latest innovation in Viña Vik's A range The Chilean winery has launched Vik Cabernet Nouveau 2024, a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon wine designed to highlight the diversity of the winery's terroir in Millahue, Cachapoal Valley. "We introduced Cabernet Nouveau to our portfolio after realising we could craft a softer, fresher, and more elegant expression of Cabernet — perfect for those moments when a traditional red just doesn’t fit the mood," says Cristián Vallejo, chief winemaker at Viña Vik. "Especially during warmer seasons, like summer, this wine offers a vibrant and approachable alternative. It has the freshness and drinkability of a Pinot Noir, but with more structure, generous fruit, and silky tannins." Vik Cabernet Nouveau is intended to be served as a chilled red, bringing Cabernet Sauvignon "into new territory", according to Vallejo. The new expression sits within Viña Vik's A range which includes a Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Cabernet Franc and rosé. In 2025, three wines from the A portfolio won major accolades for their quality. In its first harvest, Vik A Cabernet Nouveau 2024 has been awarded a Silver Medal at db's Spring Blind Tasting 2025, earning the highest recognition in its category. This achievement is a milestone for Vik, as it marks the first time this wine has been evaluated in a high-level international competition, standing out with its fresh, vibrant and fruity style that impressed the experts. Vik A Cabernet Franc 2023 was awarded Gold Medal at db's Global Cabernet Franc Masters 2025. With only 20 labels worldwide reaching this honour, the wine was praised for its dynamic yet refined structure, juicy elegance, and finely balanced minerality — a vivid portrait of its granitic soils and Mediterranean climate. Comprising 85% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine spent 12 months in French oak barrels crafted under Vik’s exclusive Barroir programme, using oak from the estate’s own hills. Cabernet Nouveau: the latest innovation in Viña Vik's A range Vik A Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 also earned a Gold Medal at db's Cabernet Sauvignon Masters 2025, joining an elite group of just 39 wines selected from 144 entries across 11 countries. The judges praised it as “a brilliant benchmark” of its variety. With 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Carmenere, this wine is a vibrant and layered expression of Millahue’s unique climate and soil, shaped by 15 months of ageing in French oak barrels. Vallejo describes the Vik A range as "our gateway into the Vik universe", allowing consumers to explore the individual varieties planted across its 4,500 hectares in the Cachapoal Valley. "It’s an invitation to discover the essence of our vineyard, a first step before experiencing our ultra-premium blends like Milla Cala, La Piu Belle, and eventually, VIK," he says of the range. Viña Vik was founded by Alex and Carrie Vik in 2006 in with the vision of developing world-class vineyards that produce unique wines. Its icon wine, VIK 2021, was awarded 100 points by James Suckling and was recently launched on La Place de Bordeaux. Vik A wines are available through direct-to-consumer sales at vikwine.com and select premium distributors across Europe, the US and Latin America.
