CEO Sammy Gonzalez Zeira and COO Zachary Larmer reveal the strategies, star-studded support, and unforgettable performances driving this year’s fundraising success for the 12th Annual Young Musicians Unite “Studio 54” Gala on April 26
HAUTE LIVING: Tell us about the Young Musicians Unite’s 12th Annual Gala—what it is, its purpose, and why it’s such an important event?
SAMMY GONZALEZ ZEIRA: The 12th Annual Gala is the biggest night of the year for Young Musicians Unite—a celebration of music education and the incredible community that makes it possible. It’s a night where students, educators, and supporters come together to witness the impact of our work firsthand and ensure that thousands of young musicians across Miami have access to the opportunities they deserve.
This event has become something truly special. What started as a fundraiser has evolved into the party of the year—an evening people look forward to, not just because of the cause, but because of the experience. It’s high-energy, high-level, and feels like stepping into the Grammys. Incredible performances, an electric atmosphere, and a shared purpose make it a night unlike any other. And none of it would be possible without the remarkable supporters who make our work a reality.

HL: Reflecting on last year’s Gala success, what were the key factors that helped Young Musicians Unite achieve the $1 million fundraising milestone at the gala?
ZACHARY LARMER: Last year’s success was the result of several key elements coming together seamlessly. First and foremost, we focused heavily on relationship-building in the months leading up to the gala. It wasn’t just about a big night of giving—it was about creating an engaged community of donors who deeply believed in our mission. Personal invitations, meaningful conversations, and ensuring that every guest understood the impact of their contribution were all essential to our approach.
Beyond that, we curated an experience that made guests feel truly connected to our work. From the moment they arrived, they were immersed in a world that showcased the magic of YMU. There was an incredible cocktail hour, a stunning photo lounge, an amazing silent auction filled with one-of-a-kind items, and an elegant seated dinner. But what truly set the night apart was the music. Eight different student bands performed throughout the evening, delivering jaw-dropping performances that left everyone in awe. By the time the formal program ended, the entire room had transformed into a massive dance party—one that our supporters didn’t want to leave.
We also had major donors who stepped up in a big way, helping us cross that $1 million milestone. It was a night filled with energy, generosity, and a shared belief in the power of music education. And it proved that when you create an experience that’s both inspiring and incredibly fun, people show up in ways that exceed all expectations.
HL: Can you share a standout moment from the gala that truly captured the mission and impact of Young Musicians Unite?
SGZ: One of the most powerful moments of the night was when Ambar Diaz, a longtime YMU student, took the stage. She had been part of our program for many years, and when she performed, it was clear that she was stepping into her future. But what made the moment even more moving was what she shared afterward.
Ambar spoke about how, before joining YMU, she wasn’t sure if music was something she could pursue seriously. But beyond that, she opened up about the challenges she faced throughout high school, including the loss of both her mother and another close family member. In the midst of that hardship, she found a family through Young Musicians Unite. She found a community of students who shared her passion, friends who supported her, and, most importantly, hope for the future.

Today, Ambar is studying music and jazz vocals at the New School in Manhattan on a scholarship. Seeing her stand on that stage—confident, talented, and full of purpose—was a moment that embodied exactly what YMU is about. It was a reminder to everyone in the room that music has the power to transform lives, and that their support makes those transformations possible.
HL: What specific initiatives or programs have been made possible because of the funds raised last year?
ZL: One of the most significant impacts of last year’s fundraising was our expansion into South Dade, where we launched programs in 16 schools that had a great need for increased access to music education. This expansion meant that thousands more students could experience the benefits of learning an instrument, playing in an ensemble, and being part of a creative, supportive community.
Additionally, we were able to strengthen our teacher training programs, ensuring that as we continue to grow, we maintain a high level of instruction and impact across all of our schools. These investments have allowed us to not only reach more students but also deepen the quality of our programming, setting the stage for long-term sustainability and success.
HL: As you set out to surpass that $1 million goal, what new strategies or approaches are you implementing for this year’s gala?
SGZ: Building upon last year’s success, we’re intensifying our focus on donor engagement well before the gala. By hosting intimate events, we’re fostering deeper connections with potential major donors, ensuring they witness firsthand the transformative impact of our programs.
We recently hosted an exclusive Gala Kickoff Dinner at the Hibiscus Island home of Michael and Stephanie Rosen, bringing together top music executives and Miami’s philanthropic leaders. The event raised $93,500 to support free music programs for students in Title I schools across Miami-Dade. Guests enjoyed a gourmet dinner by Chef Danny Serfer and performances by YMU student bands. Miami-Dade County Commissioner Kionne L. McGhee spoke on the power of mentorship, while Lava Records founder Jason Flom donated $25,000 in a show of industry support. Notable attendees included iHeartMedia President Richard Bressler, Khaliah Ali, and more.

HL: Philanthropy and the arts often go hand in hand—how do you inspire donors to invest in music education, and what makes Young Musicians Unite unique in this space?
ZL: Inspiring donors begins with making our impact tangible. Music education transcends learning an instrument; it cultivates discipline, teamwork, confidence, and leadership. By sharing real-life stories of our students—detailing how music has transformed their lives—we connect with donors on a profound level, illustrating the lasting change their support facilitates.
What sets Young Musicians Unite apart is our commitment to in-school music education. While we offer after-school programs, our primary focus is integrating comprehensive music programs directly into schools, especially those lacking resources. This approach ensures consistent, long-term engagement, fostering a culture of music that permeates the entire school community. Our deep integration within these educational environments allows us to create sustainable programs that have a lasting impact on students’ academic and personal development.
HL: This year’s gala promises to be another unforgettable evening—can you share who will be chairing the event and any special performances or appearances guests can look forward to?
SGZ: We’re thrilled to announce that this year’s gala will be chaired by Kaisa Levine, the founder of Fridababy. Kaisa launched Fridababy in 2007, introducing innovative childcare products like the NoseFrida to the U.S. market. Under her leadership, the company experienced remarkable growth, leading to its acquisition in 2016. Beyond her entrepreneurial success, Kaisa is a dedicated philanthropist, actively supporting organizations such as the Florida Foster Care Review, Pelican Harbor Seabird Station, The SEED School of Miami, and Young Musicians Unite. Her passion for community engagement and the arts makes her an exceptional leader for this year’s event.
Guests can anticipate captivating performances by our talented student bands, showcasing the skills and dedication they’ve honed through our programs. We’re also excited to feature alumni who have continued their musical journeys, as well as special appearances by YMU mentors and teachers performing alongside our students. While we’re keeping some surprises under wraps, attendees can expect an evening filled with extraordinary music and inspiring stories that highlight the mission of Young Musicians Unite.
HL: For those looking to support Young Musicians Unite beyond the gala, what are the best ways to get involved and make a lasting impact?
ZL: While the gala is a cornerstone event, our mission thrives year-round, and there are numerous ways to contribute. One of the most impactful methods is through recurring donations; consistent support enables us to plan effectively and sustain our programs over time.
We’re always seeking passionate educators who are eager to inspire and mentor the next generation of musicians. For those with a background in music and a desire to work with youth, joining our teaching team can be a fulfilling way to make a direct impact.
Businesses and corporate partners can also play a pivotal role by sponsoring programs, donating instruments, or offering professional development opportunities for our students. Engaging with Young Musicians Unite in these capacities not only enriches our programs but also fosters a community committed to the arts and education.
Ultimately, becoming an active member of the YMU community—whether through financial support, teaching, or partnership—helps ensure that music education remains accessible and transformative for students across Miami.
