It started in January, when federal health workers were assigned to scrub their agencies’ websites of now-forbidden words. Those first few days of the Trump administration landed like psychic blows to career scientists and other employees dedicated to public health research and practice. 

“Every hour, it seemed like there was something new. You have to take down DEI stuff from your website, the word ‘transgender,’ the word ‘non-binary,’ take all these websites down, then put them back up, then take them down,” said one employee who requested anonymity for fear of reprisal. “Morale is in the gutter and has been since then, but it’s progressively one fire after another after another. There’s really not been any reprieve since January 20.”
