Universal Music Group Moves To Dismiss Disgraced Rapper’s Lawsuit

When the artist formerly respected as Drake launched a legal battle against Universal Music Group for platforming Kendrick Lamar’s hit song “Not Like Us,” many saw the move as Drake throwing in the musical towel. There are many ways to handle rap beef, and running to the judge has never been one of them. Desperate fans began to theorize that the lawsuit was actually a 4-D chess move to prevent Kendrick Lamar from performing the song at the Super Bowl and having millions of people call Drake a pedophile at one of the most viewed events of the year. Put simply, that did not work. Nor did the threat of a lawsuit prevent Conan O’Brien from making a joke at the Oscars about Kendrick calling Drake a pedophile. With the damage already done, what’s the point of keeping up the lawsuit charade? UMG is moving to dismiss the suit and Reuters has coverage:
Drake’s longtime label Universal Music Group on Monday sought a dismissal of his defamation lawsuit over its promotion of Kendrick Lamar’s Grammy-winning single “Not Like Us,” the biggest hit of a barrage of diss tracks between the two rappers.
…
UMG called Drake’s lawsuit “no more than Drake’s attempt to save face for his unsuccessful rap battle with Lamar.”
Oof! There’s really only one response to such a legal slap in the ego. Take it away, Aubrey!
The “Teenage Fever” rapper’s legal team isn’t backing down and called UMG’s move a “desperate ploy to avoid accountability.” It’s understandable — when you lose in the court of public opinion, the court of law might be the only chance you have left at redemption. I don’t think that the gamble will come out in Drake’s favor, but the Stake mascot is no stranger to playing his odds and losing bigly.
