The Wine Society appoints Victoria Mason MW
Victoria Mason MW joins the buying team permanently, taking on sustainability initiatives alongside wine purchasing responsibilities. The Wine Society, founded in 1874, has announced the permanent appointment of Victoria Mason MW to its buying team, strengthening its expertise in wine selection and sustainability. Mason, who initially joined the retailer in May 2024 as maternity cover for Sarah Knowles MW, will transition into a permanent role from September after a short sabbatical in South Africa. During her temporary tenure, Mason has overseen The Wine Society’s Italian, Champagne, and US wine ranges. While her permanent buying regions are yet to be confirmed, she will also take the lead on key sustainability projects, including The Wine Society’s Climate & Nature Programme. This initiative provides annual funding to growers trialling and implementing regenerative viticulture practices aimed at improving soil organic carbon and biodiversity. Pierre Mansour, director of wine at The Wine Society, welcomed the appointment, stating: “We are delighted that Victoria has agreed to stay on at The Society in a permanent role. Conversations have been ongoing for some time as we quickly recognised her exceptional talent as a wine buyer and her way of working perfectly embodies the spirit of The Wine Society. Beyond covering Sarah Knowles’ maternity leave, Victoria has brought additional expertise to the team through her knowledge and passion of regenerative viticulture; an approach to vineyard management that sits at the heart of our sustainability plan.” Mason, who earned her Master of Wine qualification in August 2024, focused her research paper on regenerative viticulture in Stellenbosch, a project that won her the Quinta do Noval Award for the best RP by a new MW. She expressed enthusiasm for her new role, saying: “I could not be more excited about becoming a permanent member of the amazing team at The Wine Society. It feels like the perfect fit for me: the way The Society does business is the way I want to do business. Our Climate & Nature Programme launched last year and is one of many inspiring initiatives under way, underlining we are a business with a long-term view. To be taking on responsibility for leading this programme alongside my buying responsibilities is my dream job. I can’t wait to get started.”
