The Interview Jan-Willem Klinkenberg of TGW Ltd

TGW Logistics is a leading provider of automated warehouse solutions, specialising in intelligent intralogistics. With decades of experience, we help businesses optimise their intralogistics operations.

Jan-Willem Klinkenberg, Director of Business & Development at TGW Limited, speaks to Warehouse & Logistics News.

What does your role involve on a day-to-day basis?

As a part of the TGW Northern Europe team, my role involves identifying and developing business opportunities to drive the company’s growth. The main goal is to attract new customers, strengthen existing relationships, and expand TGW’s market share in intralogistics solutions.

How would you explain the TGW Culture?

In 2004, TGW Logistics’ co-founder, Ludwig Szinicz, transformed his company into a foundation-owned organisation with a bold mission: “TGW Logistics is not a purely economic partnership of convenience. It is a community of shared values that is driven by a purpose and follows the mission of its foundation. This community enables personal and technical growth as well as entrepreneurial success.”

We believe our values-based culture will carry us into the future and foster continued growth – not just for our business but also for those who drive our success. This unwavering commitment to people, paired with cutting-edge innovation in warehouse automation and warehouse logistics, makes anything possible.

How does this culture assist your clients’ requirements?

Our culture is deeply client-focused, meaning we tailor each solution to our clients’ specific needs. By fostering collaboration and innovation, we ensure that we are not just solving today’s logistics challenges, but anticipating future demands. This forward-thinking mindset allows us to create solutions that are scalable, efficient, and sustainable—ensuring long-term success for our clients. As the owner of TGW Logistics, the TGW Future Private Foundation safeguards our company’s long-term vision. TGW Logistics cannot be sold, making us a reliable employer, financial partner, and pioneer in automated warehouse solutions.

Do you have direct contact with customers, and get involved developing solutions?

Yes, I have direct contact with customers and I am involved in customising solutions for our customers. Understanding our customers’ challenges firsthand helps us design solutions that are highly tailored and effective. I work closely with our teams to ensure that the solutions we propose align perfectly with the customer’s business goals.

Tell us how TGW are growing in the UK

TGW is growing in the UK, with several major projects in retail and omnichannel as in e-commerce. We are becoming known for our expertise in warehouse automation, and as demand for intralogistics solutions increases, TGW’s presence in the UK will continue to grow in 2025 and beyond.

What makes TGW unique in your industry?

What sets TGW apart is our ability to offer highly scalable and flexible automation solutions that can grow with our clients’ businesses. We take a holistic approach to logistics, combining cutting-edge technology with expert knowledge and tailored services. Our focus on innovation, operational excellence, and customer satisfaction drives our competitive edge. And of course, because we are a foundation.

What solutions do you offer customers?

We offer a wide range of intralogistics solutions, including automated material handling systems, warehouse management software (WMS), order picking systems, and complete warehouse automation systems. Our solutions are designed to optimise storage, improve efficiency, and reduce operational costs while ensuring scalability for future growth.

What sectors do these clients work in?

Our clients come from various industries, such as Fashion, Grocery, Industrial Consumer & Goods and Healthcare. Each sector has its own intralogistics challenges, and we provide solutions tailored to their specific needs.

How can your solutions help?

Our solutions help businesses streamline their logistics operations and increase efficiency through automation. By optimising the entire supply chain, we help clients reduce costs, improve accuracy, speed up order fulfilment, and create a more sustainable and future-proof operation.

How future-proof and flexible are your solutions?

Our solutions are built with scalability and flexibility in mind. We ensure that our systems can adapt to future demands, whether it’s through increased throughput, expanding inventory requirements, or evolving technological advancements. This future-proof approach means that our clients can continue to grow and innovate without the need for a complete overhaul of their systems.

What new services/solutions are you offering for 2025?

Our partnership with SafeLog on mobile robots is off to a strong start, with several bots already deployed in significant projects. Both SafeLog and TGW share similar cultural values, and we’re working on a range of applications, from smaller tote-based AMRs to larger pallet-carrying robots.

Our TGW SmartPocket, a revolutionary pocket sorter, is currently in beta development with partners. We’ve hosted several Innovation Days to showcase the technology to our existing clients, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. What’s particularly exciting is that when we speak with clients, they often view it in new ways and help us evolve it for other applications.

What do you see as the biggest opportunities in the coming year for TGW?

The market and demand for warehouse automation is still on a good level. As a company we are facing growth in all disciplines. We are on a continuous search for (talented) people who would like to join our company and grow along with us.

What are the biggest challenges facing TGW and your industry?

TGW started building the expansion of its factories based in Marchtrenk Austria. We need to work and recruit hard to keep pace with the growing demand for warehouse automation

Tell us about a recent project TGW were involved with.

At the moment we are involved in a diverse number of projects in both design and realisation phase. We also serve the markets for Grocery, Fashion and Industrial & Consumer Goods.

A recent project involved designing a highly automated order fulfilment system for a major UK retailer. The solution optimised storage, reduced order picking times, and increased throughput while being flexible enough to scale with the retailer’s future growth plans.

Do you cover the whole of the UK?

Yes, TGW provides services across the entire UK. We have a strong presence throughout the country and are committed to delivering top-quality intralogistics solutions regardless of location. Whether it’s a regional warehouse or a national distribution centre, we are equipped to support clients wherever they are based.
