STAT+: HHS deputy secretary pick O’Neill discloses history of work with vaccine developers

President Trump’s pick to be second in command at the Department of Health and Human Services has a history of working with vaccine companies and other health care firms, according to his financial disclosures released Thursday.

Jim O’Neill, nominee to be HHS deputy secretary, disclosed work in recent years with ADvantage Therapeutics, which is developing a vaccine to treat Alzheimer’s disease, and Rational Vaccines, which is developing a shot for herpes.

At ADvantage, O’Neill is an adviser and member of the company’s board of directors. He received more than $60,000 from the company but could see between $15,001 and $50,000 more in bonuses before joining HHS, according to the disclosures. Rational Vaccines was also expected to pay him between $15,001 and $50,000 in consulting fees after the disclosures were filed. He will forfeit any expected payments that come after taking the role, should the Senate confirm him.
