STAT+: AI agents in health care: Everything you need to know, but didn’t know how to ask
AI agents are finding their way into the world of health care, but tech developers may be more excited than clinicians.

“This year is going to be the year AI agents are going to get deployed,” NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang declared at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show. But what are AI agents, and how do they apply to health care?
Several health tech companies have jumped in on agents. One of the early entrants, Hippocratic AI, has a lineup of AI “nurses” that health systems can deploy for specific workflows, such as discussing cervical cancer screening or checking in on a chronic kidney disease patient’s ongoing care. The company also has agents aimed at insurers and drugmakers.
Earlier this year, Innovaccer and Salesforce also each announced lineups of AI agents geared toward health care. But how prevalent are agents in the health care system? The latest update to the STAT+ Generative AI Tracker added over 40 health systems that are now customers of these and other AI agent platforms.
