You’d expect smooth sailing in a case that had around a thousand bottles of baby oil seized as evidence. Given his billionaire status, Sean Combs was able to retain some of the best lawyers money could buy. Unfortunately, while big bucks may be a major thing, they aren’t the only thing. One of the high-profile lawyers representing Sean Combs hit a rock representing Diddy; now he wants out. USA Today has coverage:

As the embattled music mogul faces down a torrent of civil suits and a federal sexual abuse and racketeering case, one of his lawyers, Anthony Ricco, is calling it quits. In a motion filed in New York Federal Court Friday, Ricco notified the judge of his intent to withdraw, adding it had followed discussions with Combs’ lead counsel Marc Agnifilo.

“Although I have provided Sean Combs with the high level of legal representation expected by the court, under no circumstances can I continue to effectively serve as counsel for Sean Combs,” Ricco wrote.

What was the offense that broke the Bad Boy defender’s back? As much as we’d like to know (and Diddy would rather the reason be kept under wraps), respecting attorney-client privilege is doing a lot of work to stop people from prying for explanations. Despite Ricco’s departure, Diddy still has a dedicated legal team that is willing to defend him in court. That team should fight the urge to throw out press releases and give interviews explaining away Ricco’s decision to jump ship — the last time Marc Agnifilo tried to deflect the heat from internal matters hitting the public eye, Costco had to publicly announce that they don’t sell baby oil in bulk.
