With the right policies, advanced science, and strong leadership in government agencies, President Donald Trump has the power to save more American lives from rare diseases than any president in history. That might be a bold statement, but it is based on my prior conversations with him as well as his public statements and actions in his first term. And such leadership and change cannot come soon enough for so many in need.
Eight years ago this week, my family and I met with the president just before his first address to a joint session of Congress — on World Rare Disease Day. In that Oval Office meeting, we discussed how reforming, modernizing, and streamlining the Food and Drug Administration’s approval process for rare disease therapies could create a wave of new cures and therapies for the millions who suffer — most of them children. And we discussed the need for strong and bold leadership at the FDA.
