Powerful new obesity drugs like Wegovy and Zepbound have changed how we treat weight and chronic disease. Yet their real promise may lie in the restored belief that we can meaningfully improve our health.

As David Kessler, former commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, has poignantly described, the struggle to lose weight can feel like a life sentence of failure — “a cycle of despair.” The sudden ability to succeed, and potentially sustain that success, can be transformative, and unleash effects that extend beyond physiology.
