Major Chilean producer MontGras has secured B Corp certification. db finds out how this was achieved and why it matters for the wine sector. B Corp status is granted to businesses after an assessment from non-profit organisation B Lab. MontGras' head of marketing Pilar Peñafiel told db that certification was the result of "a long and rigorous process that involved every area of our winery". "It wasn’t just about meeting a checklist — it was a deep internal transformation. We undertook a comprehensive impact assessment led by B Lab, where we evaluated our performance across governance, workers, community, environment, and customers. We are proud to have achieved 92 points, well above the required 80 and the global average of 50.9," revealed Peñafiel. The certification does not just take into account the environmental aspect of sustainability, but also its social connotations. "We focused on ensuring fair labor conditions, inclusion, health and safety, and long-term development for our team. Our workforce is mostly local, and we actively support small-scale suppliers, educational initiatives and social organizations across the valleys where we operate." Peñafiel cited how MontGras "regularly" hosts open door events, including environmental treks, school visits and community fairs to create a "meaningful bond" with its neighbours.

Why B Corp?

B Corp status has become an aspiration for many wineries across the world. Peñafiel expressed a belief that this is symptomatic of social and environmental responsibility no longer being a "niche" issue: "It’s the future of business. Just as organic certification went from being a rarity to an industry standard, B Corp is becoming the new baseline for responsible companies." Consumers, especially in developed markets, are increasingly choosing brands aligned with their values," she continued. "Other wineries have publicly stated that their B Corp journey reflects 'a shared belief in doing business differently, for good', and we fully agree. It’s not about perfection, it’s about commitment and accountability. Ultimately, there’s a growing awareness in our industry that success must go hand in hand with purpose. And certifications like B Corp provide both a framework and a signal to the world that we’re serious about creating positive impact." "Becoming a B Corp reflects an internal conviction that we must aim for a greater good, not just profitability. Other wineries have expressed how B Corp helped them align their business model with their ethical commitments. We feel the same. It’s about coherence: walking the talk," added Peñafiel.

Regenerative

B Corp is not the only sustainability-minded certification that MontGras has gone for – the brand, which has more than 600 hectares of estate-owned vineyards across Chile, is also certified in Regenerative Organic Agriculture by Ecocert Chile. "At MontGras, we are constantly asking 'what’s next?' and we believe regenerative agriculture is the answer. It reaffirms our belief that taking care of the soil, biodiversity, and ecosystems is not just good for the planet — it’s essential for the future of winemaking.
