There are those bottles we love to pop open right away, while others coveted labels are meant to age. A custom wine cellar not only provides space for those favorite bottles but it can also be designed with helpful techniques in mind for protecting and displaying your investments.

“Wine cellar design is essential for preserving and showcasing a collection while adding value to your home or business,” says Marshall Tilden III, chief revenue and education officer at Wine Enthusiast. “When the right cooling system is used to maintain the optimal temperature and humidity, you can ensure your prized collection is being properly protected.”

But just how should you design your cellar? There are a few key design concepts that are trending in 2025 for collectors at any level.

“From traditional to modern, design enhances the experience of wine appreciation, allowing you to express your particular style preferences,” adds Tilden.

Read on for the key wine cellar design trends that are gaining traction this year.

Natural Materials

In the world of interior design, taking cues from nature is both on trend and timeless. This often shows up in the use of natural materials, like wood. Cellars are no exception.

“Even with the increase of more modern styles of metal and alternative material racking, traditional wood racking is still by far the most popular material being used in our wine cellar designs,” says Tilden.

These natural materials include mahogany, oak and pine used for crafting racking systems or stone elements for accents to enhance the aesthetic and add warmth to your space.

“When you think of the natural process of making wine, it includes grapes, vines and barrels, all of which are affiliated with wood,” says interior designer Sara Lynn Brennan. “Bringing in these elements in various ways is appropriate and appreciated.”

Eco-Friendly Features

Sustainability conversations are bubbling up throughout the wine industry, from vineyard management to winery architecture and organic and biodynamic bottles. The conversation is coming home to collectors, too.

Environmentally conscious consumers are choosing items such as racking systems crafted from wood sourced from sustainably maintained forests. “This is particularly important for redwood, as it’s an endangered species,” says Tilden.
