FGO to Launch Its First-Ever Resident Orchestra Under Maria Todaro’s Visionary Leadership
Miami, FL — Florida Grand Opera (FGO) proudly announces the appointment of internationally renowned conductor Pablo Mielgo as its new Music Director. This strategic move, spearheaded by Maria Todaro, General Director and CEO of FGO, marks the beginning of an exciting new era for the historic company as it prepares to establish its own resident orchestra—a transformative step toward elevating artistic excellence and institutional identity.
With this initiative, FGO reaffirms its legacy as one of America’s oldest and most influential opera companies, while laying the foundation for a dynamic future rooted in musical innovation and excellence.
“Bringing Pablo on board is part of a larger strategy to restore FGO to its rightful place on the international stage,” said Maria Todaro. “He shares our belief that a great opera company is built on a unified and artistically driven orchestra. Together, we will build something that honors our past and inspires generations to come.”
A Legacy Reimagined
For over 83 years, FGO has been a cornerstone of American opera, launching legendary careers—including Luciano Pavarotti’s U.S. debut—and serving as a vital gateway for international talent to connect with American audiences. With this bold new direction, Todaro and Mielgo aim to reinvigorate that storied legacy with renewed vision and purpose.
Meet Pablo Mielgo
Pablo Mielgo brings a distinguished global reputation and a wealth of experience. Having worked alongside conducting legends like Sir Colin Davis, Daniel Barenboim, James Conlon, and Claudio Abbado, Mielgo is highly respected in both symphonic and operatic circles. His ongoing collaborations with opera icons such as Nadine Sierra, Juan Diego Flórez, Pretty Yende, Sondra Radvanovsky, and Anna Netrebko speak to his artistic range and deep connections within the international opera community.
Since 2014, Mielgo has served as Music Director of the Balearic Symphony Orchestra in Spain, where he is preparing to inaugurate Caja de Música—one of Europe’s most technologically advanced and versatile concert halls.
A New Chapter for FGO
As Music Director, Mielgo will work closely with Todaro to recruit exceptional musicians, define the orchestra’s artistic identity, and integrate it into FGO’s core productions. The launch of this resident orchestra will enhance the company’s musical cohesion and creative capabilities—bringing depth, consistency, and soul to every performance.
This initiative not only strengthens the foundation of FGO’s productions but also represents a return to operatic tradition—where a unified, in-house ensemble brings a distinctive sound and spirit to each season.
