Dublin pub sells €5 Beamish stout to protest Guinness price hikes
A pub in Dublin, Ireland has slammed Diageo for upping its beer prices, replacing its longstanding €5 Guinness deal with Beamish stout. Dublin pub sells €5 Beamish stout to protest Guinness price hikes Kavanagh's Pub New Street in Dublin, Ireland has made its opinion on Diageo's draft beer price increases clear on social media. The pup famously kept its Guinness at €5 for anyone paying with cash throughout previous price hikes. However, its owners have now swapped out Guinness for Beamish stout in their €5 deal as a way of "telling Diageo to F@%k off", they said on social media. Diageo informed Irish publicans in January that the price of Guinness, Harp, Smithwicks, Hophouse 13 and Harp will rise by 6% per pint before VAT from 3 February. Industry sources warned that once VAT, duty and pub margins were added, an extra 30% could be added to the price of a pint at the tap. The hike is likely to have raised the price of a pint to over €6 across the country, and tip the Dublin pint price above €7. Price rises in February were the fourth increase from Diageo in two years. Kavanagh's Pub New Street has previously absorbed the increases so as not to pass higher prices on to consumers. However, the pub has now taken a stand. The pub said in a post on social media on 8 February: "The increase came into effect on the 3rd of Feb we will be passing this increase on from this morning as we are now into our new stock. "The unfortunate thing is Guinness is needed in our bars & those global elites know that." The pub therefore said it was "leaving the decision to you the customers" over whether they are willing to spend more on a pint. As an alternative, the Dublin pub is offering Beamish stout for €5 and the price of Guinness will increase. The post continued: "I’ve more than played my part, I will no longer offer a reduction for cash on the pint of Guinness, instead we will now stock Beamish as an alternative for just €5. (Locked in for 12 months) "I would encourage as many of you as possible to try this as an alternative to Guinness as a way of telling Diageo to F@%k off." Kavanagh's Pub New Street is also removing Guinness 0.0 and Tuborg and will have "an alternative value lager option to replace the Tuborg".
