This Valentine’s Day, a new survey from the British Retail Consortium (BRC) has revealed that dining out is the most popular way for people to celebrate the day, with 27% of respondents planning to take their partner for a meal.

Following this, 19% intend to purchase cards, while 10% plan to treat their partner to drinks or flowers. A smaller proportion (4%) are planning a trip away, and 11% will be spending on other gifts.

Younger people are leading the charge according to the survey, with 65% of 18-34 year olds intending to spend money on their partner, compared to 57% of 35-54 year olds and 39% of those over 55.

Younger adults are more likely to choose experiences such as dinners, drinks, or trips away, while the older age group tend to favour traditional gifts like cards, flowers, or other presents.

Men are more likely to spend on Valentine’s Day than women, with 55% of men planning to buy gifts, compared to 49% of women.

Sheffield leads the list of cities where people are most likely to spend, with 65% of respondents planning to spend money, while Plymouth ranks the lowest at 30%.

BRC director of insight Kris Hamer said: “Valentine’s Day is an important moment for millions of couples. Whether it’s a meal out or a thoughtful card and flowers, many will be spending a little extra this year.

“Retailers, restaurants, and bars have been preparing for weeks to ensure customers enjoy a special Valentine’s Day.

“It’s also an important time for the high street, with a notable uptick in spending in the days leading up to the big day. Retailers are making sure there’s something for everyone, from chocolates to flowers and beyond.”
