[Comment] The long last mile in global poliovirus eradication: what should Pakistan do?

With global poliovirus eradication hinging on just Pakistan and Afghanistan, there is concern about lack of progress in both neighbouring countries. From a low of six cases in 2023, Pakistan's emergency programme for poliovirus eradication has undergone a serious setback with 70 cases of poliomyelitis due to wild poliovirus 1 in the country in 2024 (Pakistan Polio Eradication Programme; personal correspondence). Some 31% of the 2003 environmental surveillance samples from 127 sites were positive, a six-fold increase over 2023 (Pakistan Polio Eradication Programme; personal correspondence).
