[Comment] Accelerating vaccine development in Africa: lessons from HIV research

Africa bears a disproportionate infectious disease burden, with HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria posing ongoing threats alongside recurrent outbreaks of mpox, Ebola virus disease, and Lassa fever. These diseases cause high morbidity and mortality and hinder sustainable development. Many infectious diseases can be controlled through access to vaccines, yet Africa remains dependent on vaccine research and development (R&D), supply, and agendas driven by institutions and priorities outside Africa.1
