Co-op to price match Aldi on 100 everyday essentials

Co-op is price matching Aldi on over 100 everyday essentials for its members in stores and online, marking the retailer’s biggest ever value campaign.

The initiative will see six million of the convenience store chain’s members access lower prices on own-branded items such as fresh fruit, milk, eggs, meat and bread.

The new Aldi price match promise will join Co-op’s existing member prices proposition and takes the retailer’s total investment into lowering its prices to almost £170m over the last two years.

Co-op managing director Matt Hood said: “I am very clear that, in this current economic climate, price is most often the deciding food shopping factor for our members and customers.

“Which is why we are taking this big step to price match, in our stores and online, as we know discounter prices are often the benchmark of value for consumers, and we are facing directly into that.

“I truly believe we run the best small stores in the UK, loved by our members, customers, and communities, where we offer local and convenience shopping with great value and high quality, carefully sourced products.

“Price has often been perceived as the Achilles heel of convenience shopping, but this new initiative will change that and show there is no compromise in value, quality, or range to shopping conveniently.”

Co-op’s new Aldi price match comes the Big Four grocers have pulled back on the number of products included in the initatives in recent weeks.

Last month, it emerged that both Sainsbury’s and Tesco had cut down on the items covered in the price comparision by more than 150 collectively.

Asda scrapped the price matching proposition at the start of the year ahead of the relaunch of its Rollback campaign.
