Co-op bolsters board with new non-executive appointments

The Co-op has appointed Wais Shaifta and Lord Simon Woolley as independent non-executive directors at the business, effective immediately.

Shaifta, an expert in digital growth and transformation, has extensive experience leading technology businesses.

He previously served as CEO of Push Doctor, the largest digital partner to the NHS, and held senior leadership positions at Just Eat and Treatwell. He is currently an independent non-executive director at Reach plc, Snappy Shopper, and the Gym Group, where he chairs the Remuneration and Sustainability Committees.

Shaifta also serves as senior independent trustee at The Football Foundation, England’s largest sports charity.

While Lord Simon Woolley, a leading political and equalities activist, co-founded the campaigning NGO Operation Black Vote. He also serves as principal of Homerton College, Cambridge, and the deputy vice chancellor at Cambridge University.

Simon also previously held roles as an Equality and Human Rights Commissioner and created the UK Government’s Race Disparity Unit. He is currently an advisor to The King’s Commonwealth Fellowship Programme and a non-executive director of Police Now Ltd and Youth Futures Foundation.

The appointments come as the convenance retailer’s board bids farewell to Lord Victor Adebowale and Rahul Powar.

Lord Adebowale, who has served for nine years, will step down following the next Board meeting in March. Rahul Powar is also stepping down due to personal reasons after six years on the board.

Co-op chair Debbie White said: “On behalf of the Co-op Board, I am delighted to welcome Simon and Wais. Their combined skills and experience will be invaluable to the Co-op as we continue to focus on growing our businesses and delivering more value to our member-owners.

“I would also like to express my heartfelt thanks to Victor and Rahul for their outstanding contributions to the Co-op Group over the years.”
