THE WHAT? Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has told employees that the company expects to reduce its total corporate workforce in the next few years due to the increasing use of generative AI and automation.

THE DETAILS In an internal note, Jassy described generative AI as a major shift that is already changing how Amazon operates across functions. While no large-scale layoffs are planned in the short term, headcount reductions are expected primarily through attrition. Some teams may see targeted cuts over time.

Amazon has already laid off over 27,000 employees since 2022 and recently cut around 100 roles from its devices unit. The company is currently deploying more than 1,000 AI agents and has added AI features to Alexa and its advertising business. The new technology is intended to replace routine tasks and alter job structures.

THE WHY? The shift signals a continued move toward automation in corporate roles, including those related to product management, advertising, and retail operations. As a major player in beauty and personal care e-commerce, Amazon’s internal restructuring could affect how these categories are supported, managed, and staffed moving forward.
