All the medallists from the Pinot Noir Masters 2025
Pinot Noir can be difficult, fickle and elusive at times. But those drawbacks make the quest for quality even more satisfying, reports Patricia Stefanowicz MW. FOR MANY of us in the wine industry and numerous consumers too, Pinot Noir is our darling. Like the little girl in the nursery rhyme: “When it is good, it is very, very good...”, it can also be a challenge. The variety is notoriously difficult to grow and vinify, but there are brilliant examples made around the globe. So, for our Global Pinot Noir Masters 2025, the judges were anticipating some delectable wines. Sparkling Pinot Noirs can be exciting and gastronomic, whether blanc de noirs or rosé, and Nicolas Feuillatte’s Palmes d’Or Rosé Intense 2008 earned a well-deserved Gold medal. The still red wines were variable, perhaps due to vintage and climatic issues or winemaking techniques. Some displayed a lack of fruit or underripeness or were marred by bitterness, not a trait normally associated with Pinot Noir. A few were correct but unexciting. The best wines showed vibrant cherry and raspberry fruit, good freshness and svelte tannins. Most benefitted from well-judged oak. Under £10, good wines came from Cramele Recaș in Romania and ouchard Aîné et Fils in Beaune. At £10–£15, Gérard Bertrand in Languedoc-Roussillon was a stand-out Gold. The £15–£20 price bracket was more consistent, with Gold medals for Éminence de Bijou in the Languedoc and Doña Paula in the Uco Valley. The lion’s share of Silver medals went to cool-to-cold climates, including Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Australia, New Zealand and parts of California and Oregon. Good value was found in the £20–£30 price bracket, with Golds for Weingut Leth’s Pinot Noir Reserve from Niederösterreich, Gérard Bertrand’s Domaine de l’Aigle, and Spy Valley’s Envoy Johnson Vineyard Pinot from Marlborough. Silver medals abounded at this price point, too, from a wide range of terroirs: Chile, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, Austria and England.
Given the costly nature of Pinot Noir, it is not a surprise that the sweet spot was the £30–£50 price bracket. Golds were awarded to Cloudy Bay (Marlborough), Lowestoft (Tasmania), and Hartford Court and Kendall-Jackson (California), with plenty of Silvers offering lovely wines at an (almost) affordable price-point. Above £50, expectations are high, and the judges found excellent Gold winners from Hartford Court and Marimar Estate in Sonoma County. Our only Master winner, and thus the Grand Master of this Pinot Noir judging day, was another Cloudy Bay wine, Te Wahi 2021 from Central Otago. Well worth the expense to taste (and drink). Pinot Noir is difficult and recalcitrant, and it does not behave the same way every year, even in the same vineyard. But, for us Pinot obsessives, finding exceptional Pinot is a quest. When we find one, we want to savour it and treasure the memories.
