The Spirit of the FR-S Lives On

Toyota may have terminated the Scion brand years ago, but the Japanese automaker seems set on making sure it isn’t forgotten. The latest special edition Toyota GR86 nods to the Scion FR-S, which has now gained new life branded as a sports car wearing the parent’s insignia. The GR86 Yuzu Special Edition will see a limited production run, with less than 1,000 models headed to the United States.

The Scion FR-S gained a cult following in its short life and was one of the few models to stick around after the brand’s demise. While the FR-S left the market following the 2016 model year, it was rebadged as the Toyota 86, which then became the GR86.

The GR86 Yuzu Special Edition pays tribute to the FR-S with a yellow paint job that resembles the citrus fruit it's named after, along with gloss-black exterior accents, including black wheels. The interior comes with bold yellow stitching on the front seats, doors, steering wheel, and parking brake. A body kit and cat-back exhaust system, complete with four large silver tailpipes, are also on the docket for the 2026 special edition model.

Other than cosmetic changes and accessory options, the Yuzu features a spec sheet similar to the GR86 Premium with the Performance package. That means the special edition model rolls out with SACHS dampers and red Brembo brake calipers, among other upgrades. Depending on options and trim level, those upgrades will cost up to $2,020.

The Yuzu Special Edition marks the fourth special edition model to grace the Toyota GR86’s lineup. The latest limited-run model is preceded by the 10th Anniversary, Trueno, and Hakone editions. The GR86 Yuzu will arrive on dealer lots in fall 2025 for the 2026 model year, with a limited production run of just 860 units.

The GR86 is One of Toyota's Lightest Sports Cars

Sports cars are typically quick and agile, and the Toyota GR86 is no exception. Weighing in at 2,811 lbs. at its lightest, the GR86 manages to shed pounds without cutting corners. The sports car comes with an aluminum hood, front fenders, and a roof. Opting for an automatic transmission adds 40 lbs. to the GR86’s weight, but even then, the coupe is still one of the lightest sports cars that Toyota makes.

Most sports cars come with a six-cylinder engine or turbocharger under the hood, but that isn’t the case with the GR86. A 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine generates 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque through a standard six-speed manual transmission, but there’s an automatic option as well. Models equipped with the manual transmission give drivers the ability to engage Track mode at the push of a button, while those equipped with an automatic gearbox feature additional clutch discs and a high-capacity torque converter.

When equipped with the manual transmission, the GR86 hits 60 mph in 6.1 seconds, with the automatic transmission getting there half a second slower. Regardless of transmission, every car comes equipped with a Torsen limited-slip rear differential that improves stability when cornering.

Final Thoughts

The Scion FR-S was a beast of an entry-level sports car that combined affordability, style, and performance into one model. The Toyota GR86 continues to embody that spirit, and the Yuzu Special Edition is just another way the Japanese automaker is paying homage to the original. Just 860 examples are planned for the United States market, so if you want this sharp yellow sports car in your driveway, you’d better keep an eye out this fall!
