THE WHAT? The Hygiene Bank has launched a campaign that calls on the UK government to remove VAT on soap. The #StopTheSoapTax initiative comprises a petition and awareness campaign using edible soap as a protest to highlight the plight of those forced to choose between food and hygiene.
THE DETAILS As The Hygiene Bank points out, lobsters are VAT-free but soap is taxed at 20 percent in the UK. Some 5.3 million adults have had to choose between buying food or toiletries in the UK in the last 12 months.
THE WHY? “Soap is a necessity, not a luxury,” says Ruth Brock, CEO of The Hygiene Bank. “It’s absurd that in the UK, a nation that has already scrapped VAT on period products, we still tax essential hygiene products like soap at 20%. This campaign is about more than just VAT reform—it’s about recognising hygiene as a fundamental right.”
