Three cheers for common sense! Desperate for a smidgen of victory, prosecutors tried to get Jeffrey Williams’s probation revoked over him sharing a tweet. While he didn’t say anything particularly dangerous, the prosecution argued that the effects of what he said were. Other people — unrelated to Jeffrey — began to comment and share threats that stemmed from a tweet he shared. And while a “dangerous” post on social media might be enough to get a tenured professor fired, it thankfully wasn’t enough for Judge Whitaker to revoke the musician’s right to not be in prison. You can see the order below:
The prosecutions argument being colorable didn’t take away from it being dumb. Thankfully, Judge Whitaker saw through it and left Jeffrey with a stern finger wag. The fun part of the order is in the footnotes:
While the Court does not find that the cited social media post rises to the level of a violation of Defendant’s probation, it may be prudent for Defendant to exercise restraint regarding certain topics.
That is the most judicial “shut up, dummy” I’ve ever heard. It is good advice though — he’d be better off sharing his opinions on the DA in a Signal group chat than airing his thoughts on Twitter. Just make sure he doesn’t add any journalists to the group. Sorry, ThuggerDaily.
