Decathlon names new CEO in leadership reshuffle

Decathlon has appointed Javier López as its new chief executive officer, replacing Barbara Martin Coppola, who held the role since March 2022.

López, who has been with the sports specialist for over 26 years, previously served as the executive director in charge of Decathlon’s global value chain, a position he took on in 2022.

His appointment comes shortly after Julien Leclercq, son of Decathlon founder Michel Leclercq, was named chairman of the board.

López will now lead the group’s strategic efforts to expand its market presence and further promote the brand’s commitment to making sports accessible for everyone.

Having held various leadership roles within the French sporting giant, including CEO of Decathlon Spain from 2015 to 2022, López is expected to steer the company into its next phase of growth.

Leclercq said: “I would like to thank Barbara Martin Coppola for her work over the past three years. Today, Decathlon is an increasingly recognised sports brand globally, with strong products, a positive impact, and a growing commitment to sustainability.

“I have complete confidence in Javier López’s ability to unite the team and deliver sustainable growth while maintaining Decathlon’s unique, inclusive culture.”

Coppola added “I’m incredibly proud of the progress we’ve made, repositioning Decathlon and driving our digital transformation. I have no doubt that Javier will continue to lead the company to new heights and build on the momentum we’ve created.”
