[Comment] Why and how academic medicine must champion diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility

US President Donald Trump has launched a series of Executive Actions1 to dismantle diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility efforts; defund scientific research; and freeze federal funds and programmes, posing substantial threats to the nation's health. Key actions undermining diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility and health equity include removing vital health data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention;2 enforcing an anti-scientific strict binary definition of gender and sex;1 banning any diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility activities within federal agencies and encouraging such bans in the private sector, including in higher education;1 targeting federally funded grants using words such as women, Black, or disability3 and even terminating many grants early;4 slashing US Agency for International Development funding to hinder global health and development;5 and executing widespread raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
