Co-op offers 25% discount to members after cyber-attack disruption
Co-op is launching a week-long "thank you" initiative for its six and a half million members

Co-op is launching a week-long “thank you” initiative for its six and a half million members, as it nears a full recovery from the cyber attack that disrupted its food business earlier this spring.
From today (18 June), members will be able to get 25% off when spending £40 in-store, saving £10 on their shop.
The offer will also be available to new customers who join the mutual, as part of its wider push to grow membership to eight million by 2030.
The offer comes as Co-op confirms its 2,300 food stores are now trading as normal, with full marketing activity resumed and a new national summer campaign underway.
Co-op Food MD Matt Hood said: “I’m very proud that, thanks to the work of our colleagues, we are very near to making a full and complete recovery from the recent cyber-attack on our Co-op, and I’m delighted to see our stores looking back to normal and being able to serve our shoppers and communities.
“We are so grateful to our member owners for their support and patience with us during what was a very difficult time and hope this gesture of appreciation goes a little way to showing them our thanks, with more value rewards to come over the summer.”
The update follows recent confirmation from chief executive Shirine Khoury-Haq that Co-op was “nearing full and complete recovery” after hackers breached parts of its IT systems in April, leading to temporary availability issues and the exposure of some customer contact data.
While no financial or payment information was compromised, the retailer had to shut down parts of its infrastructure to contain the incident.
Khoury-Haq praised staff for their “heroic” efforts to stabilise operations and thanked members for their patience during the disruption.
Now with its food business back to full strength, the retailer is forecasting strong summer sales this week, including over 500,000 barbecue meat products, 1.1 million bottles of chilled wine, 2.3 million beers, and 128 tonnes of ice cubes. It also expects over one million lunchtime meal deal redemptions.
The convenience chain is also continuing its popular festival pop-up programme, with a record number of members shopping at its Download Festival store last weekend. The next stops include the Isle of Wight and Glastonbury festivals.
Hood added: “Our Co-op is a special business, 180 years old, with people, community and a sense of purpose at its heart, and our member owners are our backbone, giving us the focus to ensure we continue to run the best small shops in the UK.”
