Barrick warns of escalation in Mali, slams govt over office closure
Canada-headquartered Barrick Gold on Wednesday issued a sharp rebuke to the government of Mali as tensions over taxes escalated, warning that the viability of its flagship Loulo-Gounkoto mine is under threat and urging “responsible leadership” from Malian authorities. The Toronto-based gold miner said it remained committed to finalising an agreement that was fully negotiated with Mali’s Ministry of Finance in February, but accused a “small group of individuals” of blocking the deal for political or personal interests.
