Aldi is set to fund 125 UK beach cleans during 2025 under its partnership with the Marine Conservation Society.

The German discounter, which is marking its 35th anniversary in the UK, has donated £32,000 to help support the charity’s beach cleaning and litter survey project, Beachwatch, this year.

The programme helps to tackle marine pollution along the UK coastline, with Aldi’s donation set to support beach cleans across over 25km of beaches, and clearing an estimated 3,200kg of litter.

Under the partnership, the supermarket’s staff will take part in two of the organisation’s ‘source to sea’ litter picking events.

The data collected from source to sea inland litter cleans are used to track rubbish back to its source, according to the retailer.

The survey results gathered by Aldi workers will be used to find solutions to ocean pollution and to campaign for measures to bring about positive change.

Aldi UK national sustainability director Liz Fox said: “We’re proud to be continuing our partnership with the Marine Conservation Society and supporting the incredible work they do to protect our beaches and marine life.

“By funding 125 UK beach cleans this year, we’re hoping to play a role in making a real difference to our coastlines and the local communities that enjoy them.”

Marine Conservation Society head of business engagement and partnerships Carmen Spiers added: “We’re really excited to be continuing our partnership with Aldi for another year.

“Its support with the Beachwatch programme will allow our volunteers to carry out vital beach cleans across the UK, helping us on this mission for a healthier planet by collecting crucial data on marine litter along UK coastlines.”

The tie up builds on Aldi’s prior work with charities across the UK. In February, it said it had raised £11m for Teenage Cancer Trust since partnering with the organisation in 2017.

In March, it also partnered with menstrual equity charity Bloody Good Period to donate over one million period products to support the group’s battle against period poverty.
