Wiegand-Glas relies on AGVs from ek robotics

The Wiegand-Glas Group, a leading provider of glass and PET packaging solutions, has been relying on automated guided vehicles (AGVs) from ek robotics for over two decades to optimise its intralogistics processes. The third AGV system within the group has been in operation at the Schleusingen site in Thuringia since June 2020 – ensuring a smooth material flow in production.

Automated transport processes for maximum efficiency

In Schleusingen, Wiegand-Glas produces up to 3.5 million glass containers a day on seven production lines. The finished products are palletised, shrink-wrapped and transported to height-adjustable transfer positions. From here, the driverless transport vehicles from ek robotics take over all transport tasks to the warehouse. “This automation solution significantly increases the efficiency of our site and secures our processes in the long term,” emphasises Björn Bayer, Project Team Quality Assurance and Glass Control at Wiegand-Glas.

AGV solution specifically for the packaging industry

Transport robots from the CUSTOM MOVE series from ek robotics are used, which have been specially designed for the requirements of the packaging and beverage industry. The robust vehicles impress with their high manoeuvrability and payloads of up to 3,000 kg. Equipped with two chain conveyors and hold-down devices, they transport loads up to 2.8 m high and complete over 120 transport jobs per hour – even in the confined spaces of the 650 m long track.

Long-term success through automation

After more than four years of operation at the Schleusingen site, Wiegand-Glas confirms the successful implementation of automation. Thanks to training at the ek Academy, employees are able to make adjustments to the system independently. “The AGV system runs without additional personnel costs and fully meets our expectations,” summarises Björn Bayer. “We see great potential for further automation projects.”

With the successful implementation of the AGV solution, Wiegand-Glas is demonstrating how modern intralogistics increases efficiency and makes companies future-proof. ek robotics is once again demonstrating its expertise in the development of customised AGV solutions for industry. The post Wiegand-Glas relies on AGVs from ek robotics first appeared on Warehouse & Logistics News.
